Wilbur Raymond Hoffman, 88, Clay City, died Tuesday at his residence.

Born in Sugar Ridge Township, he was the son of Leonard and Dixie (Crafton) Hoffman.

He was married for 54 years to Gladys Modesitt Hoffman, who preceded him in death in 1995.

He was a resident of Clay City for more than 60 years. He was retired from Bryant-Poff Manufacturing Company and also served as the Clay City Co-Op manager and branch manager of the Co-Op for many years.

He was a member of the Clay City Masonic Lodge, Shrine Valley of Terre Haute, Indianapolis Scottish Rite, and Past Worthy Patron of the Clay City O.E.S, Clay City American Legion, the Clay City Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wabash Valley Power Squadron, and the Scampers Camping Club.

He was honored with the title of Kentucky Admiral several years ago and also belonged to the White River Valley Antique Club, Florida Flywheelers, and the Portland Antique Club.

He served on the Clay City Volunteer Fire Dept. for more than 47 years and served in the Army Field Artillery during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star for service.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Clay City.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Sweet and husband Herschel, Washington, and Jean Hoffman, Greensburg; two brothers, J.C. Hoffman and wife Dorothy, Terre Haute, and Max Hoffman and wife Helen, Covington; two grandchildren, one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews, and special friend, Maxine Neeley, Greencastle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Services will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 Eighth St., Clay City. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Riley.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday with Masonic Services at 7:30 p.m. Military graveside rites will be provided by the American Legion and V.F.W., Clay City posts.
