Tax time again

Thursday, April 27, 2006

Putnam County Treasurer Janet Deaton recently announced that all property tax statements have been mailed.

Anyone who does not receive a statement should call the Putnam County Treasurer's office at 653-4510 to inquire about a statement. Failure to receive a statement will not relieve property owners of taxes and/or penalties that may be due.

Taxes are due Wednesday, May 10. Current taxes may be paid at any Tri-County Bank branch, any First National Bank branch, any Old National Bank branch, or at North Salem State Bank.

Property owners must have their tax statement and not be delinquent to pay at the banks. Taxes may also be paid at the Treasurer's office, located on the second floor of the Putnam County Courthouse, or by mail.

To avoid long lines at the Treasurer's office, taxpayers are encouraged to pay at the banks or by mail. All mail must be sent to P.O. Box 508, Greencastle, 46135, and be postmarked on or before May 10 to avoid a 10 percent late penalty.

For a returned receipt, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.

All county offices will be closed May 2 for Election Day. The Treasurer's office will be closed to the public May 11-17 for tax payment processing.
