Roachdale organizes garden event

Thursday, June 8, 2006

The Roachdale Community Garden is a project in memory of Bob Allen, a long-time resident and business man in Roachdale for more than 50 years, who died in March 2005. The development of a Roachdale community garden is being facilitated by community citizens in an effort to develop a beautiful landscaped, purposeful garden area behind the Roachdale library on North Meridian Street.

The mission of the Roachdale Community Garden Advisory Board is to cultivate funding and donors for the development and maintenance of the garden. The 10-member board serves to facilitate the fundraising efforts and oversee the design, development, and planting of the garden.

The garden will serve as:

-- A location for the Roachdale library patrons and community to rest, relax, and socialize while in Roachdale,

-- An area where business people and community can take lunch breaks or just relax,

-- A mechanism for family, friends, or neighbors to donate a tree, bench, or an engraved brick in honor or memory of a loved one or in celebration of an event,

-- An opportunity for townspeople to collaborate and work together on a community project that benefits the town, citizens, and children of the community,

-- A project to beautify the town of Roachdale by providing a natural area with trees, flowers, shrubs, and other components.

In order to make the garden a reality, support is needed. Funds need to be raised with a monetary goal of $30,000 achieved before the garden can become a reality. Ways to demonstrate support include:

-- Make an individual, family or corporate donation to the garden,

-- Create a fundraiser with the proceeds going to the garden,

-- Purchase an 'engraved' brick to honor or in memory of a current or past Roachdale citizen, friend, relative, or neighbor,

-- Donate money specifically for a tree, bench, or other large items planned for the garden, and

-- Donate time and labor when the planting and development of the garden begins.

Donations may be mailed to the Roachdale Community Garden Project, PO Box 36, Roachdale, 46172.

Make checks payable to the Roachdale Community Garden. Engraved bricks are currently being sold at Allen's T.V. and the Roachdale Hardware for $50.
