Cloverdale Schools agree to on-site Cummins therapist

Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Lisa Bishop must have made a good impression.

On Monday, the Cloverdale Community School Board unanimously approved a request from high school officials to reach a referral agreement with Cummins Behavioral Health Systems to set up an on-site therapist for students dealing with emotional problems.

The Cummins Health representative met with the Board in May to discuss the proposal.

Bishop was one of three Cummins Health representatives at the May meeting. She told the board the health service was willing to set up a site at the school for services to make it easier for students and their parents.

On Monday, board members learned the high school had already set up a room in its facility for representatives to use.

"We're just waiting for approval," high school representative Sonny Stoltz said. "It's such a big push right now in all school systems.

"In my eyes, we've seen this push for some time."

On Monday, Stoltz told the board members other health centers had contacted the school regarding the issue.

At its May meeting, board members learned from Cummins representatives that using the service would increase communication between the health provider and the corporation. In addition, they told the school board there would be no additional cost for the corporation as the health provider would bill parents through private insurance, Medicare or a sliding-scale fee.

Board member Todd Whitlock made the motion to accept a one-year contract with Cummins Health with board vice-president Pamelia Hepfer making the second.

Meanwhile, corporation attorney Karen Dutcher was on-hand Monday to administer the official oath of office for newly-appointed board member Don Albietz.

Albietz was unanimously approved by the board in May to replace outgoing board member Barb Petro.

Petro submitted her resignation from the school board at its April meeting. She is recovering from a recent stroke and had served on the board since July 7, 1987.

"I'd like to welcome Don to the board," board president Linda Mann said.

Albietz has lived in Cloverdale since 1976. He previously ran the Lieber State Park Recreation Area. He also has seven kids in the school system.
