A Greencastle man was charged with allegedly assaulting Greencastle Police officers Saturday evening.

Greencastle Police Chief Tom Sutherlin told the BannerGraphic Monday that Officer Chris Helmer observed Daniel Jay Capps, 32, pushing his vehicle at the intersection of Indianapolis Road and State Road 240.

When Helmer approached to assist, he detected the odor of alcohol coming from Capps.

Helmer began the tests for drunk driving and was assisted by Officer Chris Jones.

Sutherlin said that when the officers went to arrest Capps, he started to fight. "The fight was on, he would not go peacefully," Sutherlin said.

During the scuffle, Capps placed his hand on Jones' gun, but never removed it from its holster.

Both officers were able to subdue Capps, and he was transported to the Putnam County Jail.

Neither officer was injured during the altercation, but according to Sutherlin, Capps sustained an injury to his cheek.

Capps is being charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, battery against a law enforcement officer, and neglect of a dependent.
