Woman charged with trafficking

A Fort Wayne woman was charged Tuesday after being arrested this week for allegedly trafficking with an inmate at the Putnamville Correctional Facility.

Amy Faith Biggs, 30, was arrested and placed in the Putnam County Jail Monday after police say she smuggled marijuana to her husband, Joseph Biggs, who is serving time for armed robbery and drunk driving.

Biggs appeared in Putnam Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon to face charges of trafficking of a controlled substance, a Class C felony, and trafficking U.S. currency, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to an incident report taken by Correctional Officer Quentin Storm, Biggs was observed trafficking these articles during a visit to the prison.

Joseph Biggs was immediately searched and found to be possession of a yellow balloon filled with marijuana contained inside an empty Frito chip bag.

After being questioned by the Internal Affairs Office, Amy Biggs allegedly said her husband asked her to bring the marijuana during a telephone conversation last week and that the money was to be given to another inmate.

The woman was searched by correctional officers after admitting she was in possession of additional contraband.

The officers found five additional yellow balloons containing marijuana.

Biggs was arrested by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department and was transported to PCJ. This is the first offense on Biggs' record.

During her arraignment, Biggs told Putnam County Circuit Judge Matthew Headley she could not afford an attorney. Headley entered a plea of not guilty for Biggs and chose public defender Jim Recker as her attorney.

When Headley asked Biggs if she had any money in any accounts to pay for a lawyer or to bond herself out, she replied she only had money to purchase medicine and diapers for her 13-month-old daughter.

Headley set Biggs' bond at $20,000 with a 10 percent cash bond allowance.

She has also been ordered to make no contact with her husband.

It is not known at this time if Joseph Biggs will be charged in the incident as well.

Biggs' pretrial hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26 at 8:30 a.m.
