Rising Hall open house benefits Putnam museum

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Antique and historic home lovers are invited to tour Rising Hall from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.

The 1870 home sits on the Putnam/Hendricks county line on U.S. 40.

Known nationwide from Bob Villa's "Restore America," the home is named for its five staircases. It is also listed on the National Historic Register and is featured in a driving tour produced by the Indiana National Road Association.

When Walt and June Prosser purchased the home in 1982, the building was inhabited by pigs and other animals. The Prossers spent the next 10 years refurbishing the home.

In 1992, they opened their Rising Hall for special tours, and since that time, more than 7,000 people have observed the home, which has been furnished with a collection of antiques.

Tickets are $5 in advance for the Sept. 16 event and $7 at the door and will be available Wednesday at the Putnam County Museum and Almost Home, Greencastle; Karen's Cafe and Walton's Stoves, Cloverdale; the Russellville Community Center; Tri-County Bank, Bainbridge; and Mill Creek Inn in Stilesville.

All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Putnam County Museum thanks to the Prossers and gifts from Steve Baker and Ambler Hill Florists.

For more information, call the museum at 653-8419.
