The Fillmore Town Council discussed fixing the roads around the town during its September meeting.

Council member Curt Leonard informed member Albert Epple, town clerk/treasurer Maxine Davis, and town attorney John Zeiner that a representative from Black Diamond Contractors came to inspect the roads. During the last meeting, member Margaret Alexander mentioned the condition of Westwood to the council and suggested having the holes patched. The council learned from Davis that it had $16,000 available to use.

Leonard said that Black Diamond was able to do the patch job, but Leonard had a suggestion for the money left over.

Leonard suggested having Black Diamond perform the patch job and use the rest of the money to repave the Main Street, starting in front of Fillmore Elementary.

Leonard did say that the representative from Black Diamond was going to get back in touch with him if they were able to do this. The council is holding off on its decision until the representative contacts them.

In other business, the board:

-- Learned there was a home in violation of the weed ordinance. Leonard informed the council that many neighbors had complained about the weeds/grass, which was standing at knee height. Zeiner suggested that Davis write a letter notifying the homeowner they are in violation of the ordinance.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is set up for Saturday, Oct. 14 at 9 a.m. This meeting is open to the public.

Bainbridge council adopts '07 budget

Two representatives of the Bainbridge Town Council approved the adoption of the proposed 2007 budget during a special meeting Monday night at the community center.

The estimated total for the 2007 budget, as printed in a legal, would be $315,378. The total was derived from four different funds that make up the 2007 budget. The four funds are the general fund, the local road and street fund, the motor vehicle highway fund, and the cumulative capital development fund.

In the general fund, the council has an estimated total of $239,680 to be used. In the local road and street fund, the council also has an estimated total of $10,000 to be used. The council has an estimated total of $60,000 to be used in the motor vehicle highway fund. The council also has an estimated total of $5,698 to be used in the cumulative capital development.

Board member Richard Cope motioned to adopt the 2007 budget as presented. President Mike Smith seconded the motion.

The 2007 budget adoption was approved by a vote of 2-0.

The next regularly scheduled town council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11 at the community center, and is open to the public.

Backyard field day set Oct. 3

The Putnam County Soil and Water Conservation District, in conjunction with Putnam and Montgomery County Purdue Extension, is sponsoring a backyard conservation field day from 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 3.

The hosts for this event are Mark and Phyllis Legan who have developed a state-of-the-art Backyard Conservation area that includes a pond, wetland, small forested area, and other areas of interest to the individual interested in developing a backyard garden into a retreat after a hard day's work.

All are invited to learn which plants are appropriate for backyard gardens and that will not only add beauty to their surroundings but help in conservation efforts as well. There will be a discussion on native plants and invasive plants in Indiana, managing small woodlots, protecting wildlife habitat, tree care and fall preparation for the spring garden.

All of the speakers for this event are experts in the area of plants and conservation. To ensure there are enough materials for all those attending, the conservation district is asking that interested persons register by calling the Putnam County SWCD office at 653-7454. The cost of the field day is free.
