County meet crowns Greencastle

Friday, January 27, 2006

Her team might have won Putnam County championship Thursday at North Putnam, but Greencastle High School girls' swim Coach Emilie Bowman is more concerned about next Thursday.

'We're right in the middle of taper, so we didn't expect many real good times. We're looking for those next Thursday,' Bowman said.

The Tiger Sharks won the Putnam County girls swim championship with a score of 310 points. North Putnam came in second with 155 points and South Putnam came in a close third with 134 points.

The Tiger Sharks came out strong in the beginning, winning the first three events.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Kendi Thomas, Alys Moore, Kelsey Murtagh and Erica Soster started the Tiger Sharks off with a big win, setting a meet record with a time of 2:01.03. Thomas came back and won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.26 while Moore followed behind her with a first-place finish in the 200-yad individual medley with a time of 2:28.25.

The Eagles got their first blue ribbon of the night when Shelby Johnston won the diving with a score of 188.95, a personal best for her. Johnston, a freshman at South Putnam, has won all but two diving events this season for the Eagles.

'Shelby did awesome (Thursday) nailing every dive off the board,' SPHS Coach Andy Dorsett said.

Johnston's win was the only win the Eagles had for the night, but SPHS Coach Windi Hornsby was pleased with her team.

'I was pleased with the way we swam (Thursday),' she said. 'We only came in third by 21 points and I think that will get them ready for our last dual with North Putnam Monday.'

The Tiger Sharks got get back on top of things when Murtagh picked up her first individual win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time1:07.16, but the Cougars slowed them down when Randi Alles stole another blue-ribbon from the Tiger Sharks with her first-place finish in the100-yard freestyle at 58.30.

Alles won the only two blue-ribbons for the Cougars, but NPHS Coach Mark Lehr was still happy with his team's performance.

'We're much better now than we were in the beginning and we're seeing improved times from everybody,' he said. 'Randi Alles swam a good time in the 50-free too.

'We had a good team swim with everybody contributing,' Lehr added.

After the 100 freestyle, it was all Greencastle. Morgan Terry won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:48.27 while the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ashley Allred, Erika Collins, Terry and Soster set a meet record with their time of 1:51.12.

Thomas won her second individual blue ribbon with her first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. She finished in 1:07.95. Moore also earned her second individual win with her record time of 1:14.43 in the 100-yard breaststroke. She held the previous meet record of 1:14.49.

The Tiger Sharks finished the meet with a strong win for the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Murtagh, Allred, Moore and Thomas. They won the event with a time of 4:08.88.

'It's been an exciting season,' Bowman said. 'Lainey Poor and Janet Grumme had personal bests (Thursday) in the diving and to get those in this part of the season is excellent.'

All three teams will be back in action next week, with North Putnam and South Putnam facing each other in a dual meet on Monday, while Greencastle will be back in action on Thursday when they head into the prelims of the Crawfordsville Sectional. The Eagles and Cougars will swim at 6 p.m. at the North Putnam pool while the Tiger Sharks will swim at 5:30 p.m.
