Monday, January 30, 2006

With a 48-44 win over Riverton Parke Saturday, The South Putnam High School basketball team moved to 8-8 on the season.

The Eagles struggled with Panthers in the first half of Saturday's ball game. The Panthers' defense only gave up five points to the Eagles in the first quarter of play, while scoring 13 for themselves.

The second quarter proved to be more favorable for the Eagles. South Putnam outscored the Panthers 11-7. Greg Chestnut, who was dormant in the first quarter, came to life draining two big three-pointers.

At the break the Eagles were down 20-16, but far from out.

'I felt like that our guards earlier in the game were telegraphing passes,' SPHS Coach Kyle Brewer said.

The Eagles came back out in the second half, and proved to the Panthers that they were not going to lay down on the court for them.

Ninety seconds into the third quarter, Matt Hicks pulled up and drained a trey to pull the Eagles within one point. Chestnut later hit another big three-pointer for the Eagles and at the end of the third quarter, South Putnam led 26-23.

The last quarter came down to free throws. The Eagles went '2-for-22 in the fourth while the Panthers went 8-for-'0. The Panthers were able to cut the Eagles lead down to three points, but with a freebie from the charity stripe, South Putnam held on for the win.

'I felt like after our game Friday with Cloverdale, our kids responded well with what we talked about and that was finishing possession's,' Brewer said. 'Our guards did a better job reacting better in situations and getting the ball to the right place in the second half.'

Hicks and Chestnut led the Eagles' offense with '2 points each while Ben Anderson and Drew Christy chipped in nine points each. Anthony Tomasino scored four points while Marcus McKinney scored two points.

In junior varsity action, the Eagles won 26-22 over the visiting Panthers.

The Eagles who are 8-8 on the season and '-4 in the West Central Conference will be back in action on Friday, when they travel to North Putnam for a WCC match up.
