Tiger Cubs sweep twinbill

Monday, April 10, 2006

NEW MARKET -- Lee Buechler and Derrick Patterson pitched back-to-back complete-games Saturday to lead Greencastle's baseball team to a sweep of Southmont on the Mounties' field.

Buechler was in control the entire seven innings in the opener, allowing only one hit in the 3-1 triumph. He struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter.

Patterson surrendered three runs, one of them unearned, in the first inning and pitched out of a jam in the sixth. He gave up five hits, struck out eight and walked two.

Greencastle evened its season record at 2-2.

"Those were a couple of big wins," Tiger Cubs' coach Troy Greenlee said.

"We had tremendous pitching and just enough hitting to win."

Southmont's lone run against Buechler in the first was unearned. The Mounties' only hit was an infield single in the third by Dustin McKinney.

"Lee Buechler was outstanding," Greenlee said. "He got ahead of the hitters and made them hit his pitch."

The Tiger Cubs scored the go-ahead run in the third on Patterson's RBI sacrifice fly. He drove in Zac Remsburg, who had a single, stole second and went to third on a bunt by Michael Richardson.

Greencastle added an insurance run in the sixth. The Tiger Cubs loaded the bases on a walk to Buechler, an infield single by Andrew Ensor, a force for the inning's second out and an infield single by Remsburg. Richardson walked to drive in the run.

In the second game, the Mounties (0-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Dustin McKinney reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Jacob Thompson. Thompson advanced to second on a ground out.

Tyler Price followed with an infield single, Thompson taking a third. Price stole second and catcher Kendall Faust's throw sailed into centerfield. Thompson scored and Price went to third. Price scored on a wild pitch.

Patterson struck out two to close out the inning.

Patterson limited the Mounties to a bunt single and put one more batter

on base by hitting him with a pitch. Patterson had a streak of nine straight outs.

Greencastle loaded the bases with one out in the second on Austin Miller's walk, a single by Johnny Pasho and a walk to Logan Campbell.

Remsburg hit a ground ball to Southmont second baseman Jared Jeffries, who let it get through him for two runs.

Patterson followed with a blast over left fielder Ben Norton's head to stake the Tiger Cubs to a 4-3 lead. Richardson and Patterson both scored on wild pitches to boost the advantage to 6-3.

Southmont put the tying runs on base in the sixth. Price waked and stole second to lead off the inning. Patterson struck out Line before Chris VanArsdol's long single to center scored Price. Skyler Early walked and both runners moved up a base on a ground out.

Patterson struck out Joey Zuk to end the threat.

Thompson had a one-out single for Southmont in the seventh, but he was forced at second base and first baseman Miller made a nice catch of a popup in foul ground against the fence for the final out.

"Patterson did a great job of settling down after the first," Greenlee said. "We got down and when we've done that in the past, it's had an effect on us, but that wasn't the case today. We responded well to it. The error (by Southmont in the second) was a big play and we were able to take advantage of it."
