Tiger Cubs game cut short

Friday, April 14, 2006

CRAWFORDSVILLE - It never rained a drop during the varsity game, but the threat of strong weather and confirmed storms moving south from Lafayette conspired to suspend the Crawfordsville and Greencastle softball game with one out in the top of the third inning.

The Athenians were ahead 2-0 when the game was delayed by home plate umpire Dan Halladay because of confirmed lightning flashes in the area.

Crawfordsville had plated single runs in each of the first two innings. Hannah Spencer scored on a bunt by Jennifer Page in the first inning, and Lauren Thompson scored in the second when Greencastle pitcher Cassie Alspaugh dropped a pop fly off the bat of Alex Brock with two outs.

The Tiger Cubs had threatened in the first when Alspaugh reached second, but Spencer got Stevie Woodall and Tabitha Wilson to pop out to shortstop Laura Woodsmall to end the threat.

With one out and Ashley Coble coming to the plate, lightening forced the game to be delayed, and after an hour's delay, with lightning still visible, and with reports of strong storms moving in, the game was suspended.

The athletics directors from both schools will talk on Monday about a reschedule date, and whether the game will be picked up where it was left off or be replayed in its entirety.

The Tiger Cubs lost their game on Thursday to Edgewood 15-0.Œ

The Tiger Cubs are back in action on Monday when they travel to Cascade for a 4:30 p.m. game.
