Eagles hosting Bulldogs for homecoming

South Putnam High School's football team will head into this week's homecoming game against Monrovia looking for its first victory of the season.

The Eagles (0-7, 0-4 WCC) will be facing its fifth West Central Conference opponent in five weeks on Friday.

They took on Speedway last week and fell to the Sparkplugs, 24-6.

Despite the score, the Eagles discovered something that could be a key to improving their fortunes.

That key revealed itself last week in the form of a trio that charged the Eagles' running game.

Hank Goldman, Jacob Parish and Josh Sanders combined for 208 of South Putnam's 240 rushing yards against Speedway.

The Eagles' offense also scored its first touchdown in three games against Speedway, having been shut out three weeks in a row by North Putnam, Greencastle and Cloverdale.

Monrovia will come into Friday's game with a record of 3-4 overall and a 1-4 mark in WCC action.

The Bulldogs fell to the undefeated North Putnam Cougars last week.

Monrovia is averaging 15.3 points per game while giving up 24.6 to its opponents.

South Putnam this season is averaging only eight points per game while surrendering 34.9 to its opponents.

The Eagles will look to earn its first win of 2006 on Friday in its homecoming game.

South Putnam and Monrovia are scheduled to begin play on Friday at 7 p.m.
