INDIANAPOLIS -- Owen Valley amassed 463 total yards Saturday as the Patriots knocked off traditional rival Cloverdale, 42-7, at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

Cloverdale dropped to 3-5 overall, including 1-4 in the West Central Conference. Owen Valley improved to 7-1 on the season.

"Owen Valley is 7-1 for a reason," Cloverdale coach Jamie Steffy said. "(The Patriots) are really good up front."

The Patriots ran the ball 41 times for 272 yards while also getting 191 yards through the air. Cloverdale tallied only 151 total yards, including 98 on the ground and 53 through the air.

"Teams haven't been able to run consistently against us," Steffy said. "Owen Valley was able to."

The Patriots got things going early as Wayne Bush capped a 14-play first-quarter drive with a two-yard scamper.

Owen Valley added two more touchdowns in the second quarter. Quarterback Jared Maners connected with Casey Bybee for a 30-yard strike. Maners added another touchdown pass from eight yards out to Brian Jones.

The Patriots continued to dominate in the third quarter as Maners found Jones for a 40-yard touchdown. Maners gave the Patriots a 35-0 lead with 6:32 left in the third period after scoring a touchdown run from 15 yards out.

"I thought (Maners) was the key," Steffy said. "He was the fastest kid on the field. That made them very tough to defend."

Steffy added Cloverdale was able to drive the ball in the first half, but key missed passes or turnovers cost the Clovers.

"We were driving the ball down the field, but we had inopportune drops," he said.

Both of Owen Valley's touchdowns in the third quarter were results of Cloverdale fumbles.

Cloverdale got on the board with 8:10 left in regulation after quarterback Chase Haltom slipped a pass through two defenders to Christian Cheatham.

Cheatham set up the touchdown drive after picking off a throw from Maners. He returned the ball nearly 30 yards to the 24. Cloverdale needed only five plays to get in the end zone.

The Patriots responded nearly three minutes later when Zack Lester ran for a 14-yard score.

Steffy said the Clovers turned the ball over only three times in the first four games this season, but have tallied 16 turnovers since.

"That's been the tell-tale of our season," he said. "And it always puts our defense in a bad spot."

Haltom was 5-for-8 Saturday for 39 yards. In addition, Cheatham was 1-for-3 for 14 yards.

Cloverdale rushed the ball 34 times on Saturday for 98 yards. Sophomore Keith Morgan paced the rushing attack with 36 yards on nine carries while Aaron Smith had 31 yards on six carries. Haltom also gained 22 yards on 11 carries.

Bush led all rushers, gaining 121 yards on 16 carries. He left the game early in the third period.

Maners was 9-for-21 in the game for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

The Clovers will face North Putnam in their final regular season game on Friday prior to taking on South Vermillion in the first round of sectional competition.
