With 1:12 left in the third quarter of Cloverdale's basketball game Tuesday with North Central, Chase Haltom broke a Cloverdale High School record that had been in place for nearly 40 years.

Haltom has been accomplishing one feat after another and on Tuesday, he added another one to his list of achievements. Haltom scored his 1,388th point making him the all-time leading boys' scorer at Cloverdale.

Haltom finished the game with 19 points giving him a grand total of 1,390 points in his high school career.

Going into Tuesday's game Haltom was 15 points away from tying Rick Ford's record of 1,386 points, that he achieved back in 1968.

After seeing Haltom's performance in the first half of the game, someone might have wondered if it was weighing on his mind, but it wasn't. Having the thought of a breaking a record on his mind wasn't the cause for his less than usual first-half performance, it was him being under the weather.

"I didn't really know what the record was until today when Sonny (Cloverdale Athletic Director Sonny Stoltz) told me, so it was never really on my mid" Haltom said. "But it is a pretty cool honor."

Haltom has been reaching and setting milestones his entire career. In his freshman season, Haltom scored 187 points then 476 points the following year. Last year he reached the 1,000 point mark with his 520 point season.

As of now, Haltom has 207 points this season, averaging nearly 26 points per contest and he has one thing on his mind -- to keep playing.

"I'm just going to keep playing and hopefully win a sectional, that the ultimate goal," Haltom said.

Haltom's coach, Pat Rady, tributes Haltom's performance to his dedication to the game.

"Chase is what you call a self-made player," Rady said. "He puts in a lot of time in the gym by himself, and as a coach, you're fortunate to reap the benefits of a player's hard work like his.

"Chase is what you would call a 'gym rat.' He's always in the gym shooting around, improving himself."

The question has been raised about Haltom breaking the Putnam County record of 1,836 points set by Laura Ledbetter in 1992, but that is that last thing of Haltom's mind.

"I don't even know what the county record is, so I'm just going to keep playing basketball and hopefully win a sectional," he said.

Rady tributes much of Haltom's success to his own hard work, but he also knows he has had some good help.

"To hit a mark like this, you have to have good teammates that will give you the ball and set the screens you need. Chase has been blessed with all of that on this team," Rady said.

Haltom is close to accomplishing another feat, tying Ann Hutcheson's record of 1,534 points. He only needs 144 points to tie her record and 145 to break it. Something that he is well on his way of doing.
