Cloverdale claims sectional championshiop

LIZTON -- The Cloverdale High School volleyball team claimed the Tri-West sectional championship Saturday with a victory over South Vermillion.

The Clovers won, 25-13, 25-16, 25-18, in a match in which they utterly dominated the Wildcats.

Amber Curtis led all scorers with 15 points, and Heather Moon had seven.

Ashley Arnold had five, Hannah Monnett tallied four, and Erica Lotz and Allie Franklin had three.

Stephanie Tutterow and Kristen Schroer had two each.

Curtis had 15 set assists, and Lotz had six. Monnett and Ashley Koosman each had eight, Ashley Arnold had seven and Kristen Schroer had four.

Moon chipped in with three digs.

"It was a great tournament for us," Cloverdale coach Kathy Moore said. "We had beaten everyone but South Vermillion in the regular season so we really wanted another chance to play them."

Moore added that the win was especially sweet for her seniors.

"The seniors have had this as a goal since they were freshmen, and it is nice to see it realized," Moore said.

The Cloverdale coach also mentioned her appreciation for the Cloverdale fans in attendance.

"Our fans were terrific, and the whole place rocked from them yelling," Moore said. "We have a tough road ahead of us, but we look forward to the challenge. One of the interesting things about this sectional title, though, is that I have three players who had mothers who were on the last sectional winner for Cloverdale."

The Clovers advanced to the sectional championship with a hard-fought, four-game win over Cascade in the semifinal Saturday morning.

The Clovers defeated the Cadets after being blown uot 9-25 in the first game.

They came back to win the rest of the games 25-18, 25-21, 25-16.

Cloverdale opened sectional action with a first-round victory over Monrovia, 18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 15-9.

The Clovers (15-15) will now face the Mitchell Bluejackets in the first round of the Mitchell Regional on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
