DePauw wins final home game on gridiron

Monday, November 6, 2006

In their final home game of the season Saturday, the DePauw University football team struck early and struck hard.

The Tigers scored all 24 of their points in the first 18 minutes of their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Austin College.

DePauw (6-3, 3-3 SCAC) scored on each of its first four series of the game, with Jeremiah Marks starting it off with a 27-yard run with 12:20 remaining in the first quarter.

The Kangaroos returned the favor with a 12-yard run by Ryan Cowley that knotted the contest at 7-all with 7:12 to go in the first quarter, but Marks put the Tigers on top for good just over three minutes later.

Marks snapped Bart Simpson's DPU single-season record for rushing yards with 4:08 left in the first quarter when he carried the ball into the endzone from one yard out to put the Tigers on top.

Marks now has a total of 1,009 rushing yards on the season.

Austin regained possession, but DePauw's Dustin Hertel sacked the Kangaroo quarterback, Kent Bell, for an 11-yard loss on a first down before forcing a fumble from Bell.

Luis Davila recovered the fumble at the Austin 19-yard line, and the Tigers went up 21-7 three plays later on a one-yard run from Daniel Stauffer.

Later still in the first quarter, another strong DPU defensive play set up another score for the Tigers.

Brett Anderson fumbled the ball after taking a hit by Ian McCleod, and Hertel recovered.

Tyler Mallory then capped the Tigers' scoring for the game with a 34-yard field goal, putting the Tigers ahead 24-7 with 12:33 to go in the first half.

Austin scored again in the fourth quarter when Scooter Means intercepted a pass from DePauw's Spud Dick, eventually resulting in a six-yard run from Cowley with 7:43 to go in the game.

"I was glad to see us come out so strong early in the game," DePauw coach Matt Walker said. "We got on them early and didn't let up, and that's what you have to do."

DePauw outgained Austin in total yards 367-184, outrushing the Kangaroos 201-155.

Marks tallied 67 yards on seven carries in the game, while Stauffer finished with 67 yards on 17 carries.

Dorrius Ford had 56 yards in 13 attempts on the ground.

For Austin (3-6, 1-4 SCAC), Cowley led the way in the rushing department with 86 yards on 14 carries, and Anderson had 49 yards on 13 attempts.

Dick was 13-of-24 for DePauw for 166 yards in the air.

Hertel, who is third in Division III in tackles for loss and fourth in sacks, finished with 16 tackles and four sacks.

Greg Sylvester had an interception for the Tigers' defense, and J.J. Costello had another.

DePauw will close the 2006 season Saturday when it travels to Wabash College for the 113th game between the Tigers and the Little Giants.

The game is the 75th to be played for the Monon Bell. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
