'MooseBump' creators ready to begin filming
The celebrity hasn't gone to their heads yet, but friend and producer Tim Hamilton recently told Nathan Lien and Kevin Sanders to just give it time.
The two 17-year-old Greencastle High School juniors recently captured first place in the AOL Be a Red Star video competition for their self-produced video, "The MooseBump Show." The video features the two hunting a deer decoy.
On Thursday, both Sanders and Lien said several people in the community recognize them with more ease now and they have both been congratulated for winning the competition, which also included a $10,000 prize.
Still, Lien said he doesn't feel different.
"We've been doing a lot of interviews," he said, "but everything is still kind of normal."
The duo recently won the contest with the help of Hamilton -- Executive Producer of 2C Media, Inc.
"Without him, we'd be really lost," Sanders said.
During the voting process, students at Greencastle took time to vote online at the school.
"We really want to thank the school," Sanders said. "The whole town has been really supportive."
The show, a six-minute video of the two performing a deer hunting instructional video with lots of jokes smeared in between. Props in the video include a spear and an artificial deer head.
The two had originally downloaded a 12-minute version of "The MooseBump Show" onto youtube.com, where Hamilton saw it and immediately contacted them.
The two also recruited Greencastle sophomore Ben Wilson, who ran around in the video with the deer head in front of him. They also used a full-size deer decoy. In the video, Lien portrays Goosebump while Sanders is Mooselodge, nicknames they gave each other.
The pair will begin filming their show Sunday with Hamilton. The shows will air on AOL RED at www.beRED.com.
They will miss school all next week in order to film. Sanders and Lien said tentative plans call for footage to be shot in the DePauw Nature Park, also at Brazil, and Cataract Lake and various locations around the state in addition to Greencastle.
The two said they've mulled over several ideas for new shows.
"We've gone through around six or seven ideas," said Sanders, who also serves as chief writer. "We want it to be perfect, because this is our one chance."
Sanders said they've considered many different ideas for new shows, but both plan to be less civilized. However, some of the ideas have been turned down by producers.
"They've declined some (of the episodes)," Lien said. "They wanted us to change them."
Sanders said one episode might consist of a camping trip while the two will also have other encounters with animals. Each episode will be three and-a-half to four minutes in length.
"We're focusing on three shows," Lien said. "These are just to get our show more popular."
Senior Vice President AOL Kids and Teens Malcom Bird told the BannerGraphic his organization was excited to work with Sanders and Lien.
"This is the first time we've really had the opportunity to take something that was developed by our users," Bird said via telephone interview Thursday. "When you saw our "MooseBump" guys, we sort of looked at it and said, 'either it's going to crash and burn or it's going to be a huge hit' with our users. And it was."
Bird added he hoped to have all three shows online before the end of the year.
Lien and Sanders said they are also writing a theme song for the show and will be recording it some time next week.
Sanders said he knows next week will not only be exciting, but demanding as well.
"We've got to do what we do," he said. "We've got to be ready. It's going to be a pretty stressful week."
