Bowl for toys

Girl Scouts in Northern Putnam County will have a Bowling for Toys event Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2 at Alex Alleys in Greencastle.

The event is open to troop members and leaders only. Cost is $5 per person for two games and shoe rental. Bring a new, unwrapped toy for a child in the county.

Movie night

Girl Scouts in Northern Putnam County will have a movie event/food drive at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at Ashley Square Cinema for scouts and their families.

Showings will be "Happy Feet" and Santa Clause III." Cost is $3.50 and a canned or nonperishable item.

Branch to conduct election of officers

Election of officers for the Greencastle Branch of NAACP is set for 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19 at the FYCDP Center, 605 Crown St., Greencastle.

All current branch members are encouraged to attend to vote for the slate of officers.

Rollerskating at Russellville on Mondays

The Russellville Community Center will provide roller skating on the third Monday of each month.

Roller skating will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20. Cost to rent skates is $2 and admission is free. Refreshments will also be available to purchase.

from 8-10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 25, children may also have breakfast with Santa.

Breakfast will include cinnamon roll and juice or milk.

There will be a $2 charge for the breakfast.

Children may also have their picture taken with Santa.

Chess competition results in champion

Sixteen chess players took part in the Canaan Church's Chess Tourna-ment at Heritage Lake Saturday.

Five rounds of Swiss competition chess play took place for four hours. The age breakdown of the players include five adults (age 40 and over), one 27-year-old, two college students (18- and 19-years-old), one 15-year-old, and seven middle school students (ages 11-12).

In Swiss Chess competition, a win is worth one point and a draw is worth one-half points. Five points would equal a perfect score in a five-round tournament.

After five rounds of play, Ron Lyon had clinched first place with a score of 4.5. Ray Robertson and Hao Li tied for second place with four points each.

A five-minute speed chess tiebreaker match determined second place with Li checkmating Robertson within the allotted time.

Junior Champion (15-under) was awarded to Austin Cooke for being the highest ranking player in the tournament under the age of 15. Cooke is 11 and placed seventh overall in the tournament.

Three more junior players gave Cooke competition throughout the day in Joey Lehr, Stephen Skillern and Austin Robertson.
