DPU runners advance past regional

HANOVER -- The DePauw University women's cross country team finished third NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Saturday and advanced to this week's NCAA Division III cross country championships while the men's team finished seventh and advanced a pair of runners to next week's race.

In the women's race, the Tigers finished with 121 points.

Case Western finished in first place with 53, and Calvin finished second with 57.

Lauren Reich was the top finisher for DPU, crossing the finish line 14th with a time of 23:01.9.

Emily Mason was 22nd at the 23:22.2 mark, and Liz Ulrich was 27th with a time of 23:36.8.

Abby Laymon was 34th at 23:46.5, Leah Seigel was 62nd with a time of 24:30.0, and Alison Case finished 75th at the 24:47.6 mark.

The Tiger men finished their race with with 171 points.

Calvin finished first with 17 points, claiming the top four spots in the race. Heidelberg was second with 119 points, and Ohio Northern was third with 123.

Chad Bennett and Drew Wyant were the top finishers for the Tigers, coming in 10th and 18th, respectively, to advance as individuals to the national championship race.

Bennett had a time of 25:59.7, and Wyant finished at the 26:19.3 mark.

Derick Lawrence of the Tigers was 36th with a time of 26:50.2, and Mike Murphy finished 39th at 26:53.2.

Zack Weinberg was 68th with a time of 27:24.0, and Chris Packnett was 76th at the 27:30.1 mark.

Bennett, Wyant and the Tiger women will compete at the NCAA Division III cross country championships Saturday at Wilmington College in Ohio with a the men scheduled to run at 11 a.m. followed by the women's race at noon.
