Greencastle falls to Mounties

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

Greencastle High School's girls' basketball team opened the 2006-07 campaign with a loss to Southmont Tuesday, 40-28.

The Mounties outscored the Tiger Cubs in three out of four quarters Tuesday.

The Tiger Cubs had a 4-3 advantage in the second quarter to head into the halftime break trailing 15-9.

Southmont opened the game with a 12-5 advantage by the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

For all of the Tiger Cubs' problems in the opener Tuesday, varsity coach Glenn Hile said the difference came down to turnovers and free throws.

"The story of the game is in two places: We had 32 turnovers, which is almost as many shots we had at the basket, and we were 8-of-25 at the foul line," Hile said.

Greencastle attempted 34 field goals in the game, connecting on only 10.

Of the Tiger Cubs 17 missed opportunities at the charity stripe, four came on the front-end of one-and-ones.

"We didn't shoot well, but it was the turnovers and not hitting foul shots that did us in," Hile said.

The Mounties were 11-of-20 at the free throw line.

Southmont was led by Beth Sparks, who scored a game-high 14 points in Tuesday's match-up.

Becky Grivas led the Tiger Cubs with seven points, while Lauren Robertson, Olivia Miller and Cassie Alspaugh all finished with five.

Junior varsity results from Tuesday's game were not available at press time.

Greencastle (0-1), with just one game under its belt, will take on the Cloverdale Clovers in the first round of the Putnam County Tournament at South Putnam High School Thursday.

"We've got everyone else who's got one or two games behind them, and for us it's one game and into the tournament," Hile said.

"I don't like it, and I've never liked it."

The Tiger Cubs and the Clovers (1-3) will hook up at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the South Putnam High School gymnasium.
