DPU men place second in tourney

CHICAGO -- The DePauw University men's basketball team fell to Chicago in the finals of the Midway Classic.

The Tigers are 1-1 on the season while the Maroons improved to 2-0.

DPU had an early six-point lead, but Chicago rallied to take a 43-40 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.

DePauw tied the contest twice in the early part of the second half and trailed by just two, 56-54, after Stephen Schott's jumper with 13:34 left in regulation.

But the Maroons went on a 9-0 run to take a 65-54 lead with less than eight minutes left. DePauw went scoreless during a six-minute stretch, but managed to close within six with less than one minute remaining.

Schott led the Tigers with 16 points and eight rebounds while Austin Brown had 14 points. Matt McDonald also had 12 points while Mike Moore finished with 11 and Tony James tallied 10.

Brandon Woodhead led Chicago with 19 points while Jesse Meyer had 13.

Schott and McDonald were among the six players named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Tigers advanced to the championship game after knocking off Earlham in the first round Saturday, 85-80.

Schott had 23 points to lead the Tigers while Moore recorded a double-double, finished with 16 points and 13 assists. McDonald also finished with 18 points.

Markous Jewett paced the Quakers with 30 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.

The Tigers will be back in action Friday when they play Judson in the first game of the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge, beginning at 6 p.m. Ohio Wesleyan and Illinois Wesleyan will tip off at 8 p.m.
