MONTEZUMA -- A balanced attack led to a win for the Cloverdale High School girls' basketball team Tuesday night.

The Clovers had four players in double figures in Tuesday's dominating 57-37 victory over Riverton Parke on the road.

Hannah Monnett, who scored a team-high 13 points, put six points on the board in the opening quarter.

Chelsie Haltom scored 11 points in the game while Ashley Koosman and Kristen Schroer each added 10.

"We're really balanced right now," Cloverdale coach Bruce Cook said. "We've played six games, and we've had four or five different leading scorers, and I think that as a team we're playing really well right now."

While the Clovers ended up winning big, they led by a slim two points at the end of the first quarter, 16-14.

In the second quarter, though, CHS turned up its offense and its defense, scoring 21 points and holding the Panthers to 10, heading into the halftime break with a 37-24 lead.

"Defensively we really kept our concentration," Cook said. "I thought we lost concentration and let them get back in the game a couple times, but I felt like we executed well for a long period of time."

The two teams scored nine points each in the third quarter, but the Clovers managed to outscore Riverton Parke 11-4 in the fourth to close out the game.

Cloverdale had three three-point baskets in the game, two from Monnett and one from Haltom.

In Haltom's last outing in the Clovers' Putnam County Tournament victory over North Putnam, she buried a pair of threes and scored a game-high 16 points.

"Chelsie Haltom's had two really good games for us," Cook said. "She handled the ball really well for us (Tuesday), and to have a ball-handler as good as her is a real asset for us."

In junior varsity action, the Clovers defeated the Panthers, 37-16.

Cloverdale (4-2) will hit the court again Monday when it travels to Eminence for a 7:30 p.m. start.

GHS falls to Bruins

LIZTON -- The Greencastle High School girls' basketball team is still searching for its first win.

The Tiger Cubs (0-6) dropped a 49-23 decision to Tri-West on the road Tuesday.

Greencastle was able to hang tough through the end of the first quarter when the game was knotted at 10, but things fell apart in the second quarter.

The Tiger Cubs were outscored, 22-0, in the second period, sending the Bruins into the halftime break with a 32-10 advantage.

"We can't put four quarters together," Greencastle coach Glenn Hile said.

As the second half began, Greencastle got off to a quick start and closed the gap to 15 after outscoring Tri-West 11-4.

But the fourth quarter saw the Tiger Cubs' momentum come to a dead stop, as they were outscored 13-2 in the period.

"We scored 21 points in two quarters, and in the other two, we scored two," Hile said. "If we just use the odd quarters in that ball game, we beat them."

Despite the outcome, though, Hile said he was pleased with his team's play in the second half, especially after the pounding the Tiger Cubs took in the second quarter.

"We did a really good job in the second half," Hile said. "They only outscored us 17-13, and we defended well."

Sam Ricks of Tri-West led all scorers with 17 points but only had two points in the second half.

Jenna Cloud scored eight points for the Bruins and was also held to a mere two points after the first half.

Olivia Miller and Kelsey Hennette led the Tiger Cubs with six points each.

In the end, though, Hile said that his team's biggest problem was its shooting woes.

"We were plagued by horrible shooting again," Hile said. "Shot after shot after shot just clunked off the rim, and I think we turned the ball over more than we should have.

"Turnovers continue to plague us along with poor shooting."

The Tiger Cubs are averaging just 24.8 points per game so far this season and were held to under 20 in Saturday's 49-19 loss to Edgewood.

"We've got to find a way to score or we're not going to win a ball game," Hile said.

In junior varsity action, the Tiger Cubs lost, 24-7.

Greencastle will take the court again Saturday when they travel to North Central (Farmersburg) to take on the Thunderbirds at 2 p.m.

Warriors top Eagles

The South Putnam Eagles' girls' basketball team dropped to 3-3 on the season after a 50-43 loss to Danville at home Tuesday.

The Eagles kept it close for most of the game, as the first quarter ended in a 9-9 tie and the first half ended with South Putnam trailing by only four, 21-17.

But the Warriors broke free in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 20-11.

South Putnam wasn't able to recover, and Danville went on to outscore the Eagles 15-9 in the fourth quarter to close out the game.

Meghan Canary led the Eagles with 13 points, connecting on five field goals and hitting two out of four shots at the free throw stripe.

Oceaia Boetjer scored nine points against the Warriors, hitting three field goals and going three-of-four at the charity stripe.

South Putnam (3-3) will be in action again Dec. 5 at South Vermillion, starting at 7:30 p.m.
