CHS wrestlers defeat Monrovia

Wednesday, December 6, 2006

Some key adjustments and very good wrestling combined to lift the Cloverdale Clovers wrestling team over the Monrovia Bulldogs Tuesday night, 54-24, to improve to 6-7 on the season.

"We moved some of our people around to match up better with Monrovia," Cloverdale coach Brian Siddons said after the match.

"We moved Zach Waycott to 125 weight class and he wrestled really well for us tonight."

Waycott won his 125 weight division with a 15-3 major decision never letting his opponent gain any kind of footing.

Brittney Hughes recorded the quickest pin of the evening, downing Monrovia's Tony Patterson in just 26 seconds in the 112 weight division.

In the 189 class, Alex Gardiner defeated the Bulldogs' Stephen Hawkins by pinning him in the second period. Gardiner reversed on Hawkins and worked him into position to gain the victory. Waycott defeated the Bulldogs' Ryan McGinley for the 125 victory with a major decision of 18-3.

The 130 class was won by Monrovia's Vince Ringer by fall over the Clovers' Zak Osburn. Monrovia continued winning as Shawn Hill pinned Cloverdale's Nick Keefer at 135. They also gained a victory at 145 as Jake Elliott defeated Cloverdale's Todd Rightmeyer.

But Cloverdale jumped on top again as Benjamin Sanders defeated Jared Dillon of Monrovia 11-6 in the 140 weight class.

Cloverdale dominated the matches early as Lee Secrest won the 152 weight class pinning his opponent with just :01 remaining in the first period. Derek Davis won the 215 weight division with a major decision against David Coons, 16-7. The Clovers' Dylan Stone pinned Pat Johnson of Monrovia with 1:12 remaining the the first period to win the 275.

Scott Mayhew and Kyle Chambers of Cloverdale won by forfeit in the 103 and 175 weight classes, respectively.

Coach Siddons' acknowledged that he was looking down the road as the Monrovia meet approached and the need for his early moving of personnel.

"We knew that tonight's matches could influence conference seatings," he said.

The only bright spot from Monrovia early was a win by Jake Hadley as he pinned the Clovers' Jacob Thompson in the 160 division.

In Junior Varsity action, Derick Evans of Cloverdale defeated Nick Tankersley by fall with :36 on the clock. The Clovers also gained a victory in the other match as Levi Haltom won by fall against Jeremy Tankersley.

"We wrestled very smart tonight," Coach Siddons said. "We showed a lot of heart."
