DePauw Notebook: Former standouts headed to Hall of Fame

Two former DePauw University men's basketball standouts were recently named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's 2007 men's Silver Anniversary Team.

The team recognizes high school graduates from 25 years earlier.

Former DePauw standouts Tim Vieke and Phil Wendel were both recognized this year.

Others on the 2007 team include Ken Barlow (Indianapolis Cathedral), Myron Christian (Evansville Bosse), Tracy Foster (Homestead), Mack Gadis (Indianapolis Pike), Roger Harden (Valparaiso), Derek Lindauer (Evansville Central), Joseph Price (Marion), Stew Robinson (Anderson Madison Heights), Scott Skiles (Plymouth), Renaldo Thomas (Gary Roosevelt), and John Sherman Williams (Indianapolis Washington).

The honorees will be recognized March 21 in Indianapolis.

Vieke attended Vincennes Lincoln before coming to DePauw.

He averaged nearly 20 points per game as a senior for the Alices and was a starter on the 1981 state champion team.

He played four years for DPU and is now the boys' basketball coach at Vincennes Rivet.

Wendel averaged 17.2 points for Plymouth as a senior to help lift the Pilgrims -- along with Skiles -- to the 1982 state championship.

He also won the 1982 Trester award and was an NCAA Division III All-American at DePauw, where he set career records for steals and assists.

Swimmers, soccer

players honored

The honors rolled in for DePauw athletes this week.

DPU junior swimmer Katie Doogan was selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week for Nov. 27-Dec. 3.

She won three individual events at the DePauw Invitational in that span, placing first in the 200-yard individual medley with an NCAA Division III B qualifying standard time of 2:10.35, which was also a school and meet record.

Doogan also won the backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley at the event while being a member of three victorious relay teams.

In addition, Steve Klabak was named the SCAC Men's co-Swimmer of the Week during that span, sharing the honor with Colorado College's Kurt Adkins.

Klabak posted lifetime bests in every event he competed in at the DePauw Invitational.

Four DPU soccer players were also recently named to the All-Region team.

DePauw seniors Davis Federspiel and Mary Beth Robinson were selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Division III All-Great Lakes Region team this week as were senior forward Nick Noel and junior midfielder Jeremy Rielley.

Federspiel, an All-SCAC performer this year and an NSCAA All-America choice in 2005, was named to the All-Great Lakes First Team after leading the Tigers' defensive unit.

She was also named to the D3kicks.com All-Great Lakes First Team.

Robinson, a forward, earned second-team all-region honors after pacing the Tigers with nine goals and 21 total points.

She also made the All-SCAC Team.

Noel was a second-team All-Great Lakes Region choicce by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and a First-Team selection for D3kicks.com.

He led the Tigers with 17 goals and 11 assists this year and was named the SCAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Rielley earned First-Team accolades by D3kicks.com after finishing the campaign with 13 goals and four assists.

He was also First-Team choice in the SCAC.

Lady Tigers move up

The DePauw women's basketball team moved up two spots in both Division III national polls this week.

The Tigers (5-1) moved up to fifth in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

They are also now ranked sixth in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 coaches poll.

DePauw will play Monmouth on the road Saturday at 4 p.m.

Tigers ranked in polls

Following another success in the fall season, the DePauw women's gol squad is currently ranked third by both the National Golf Coaches Association and Golfstat.com polls.

Methodist and Gustavus Adolphus are first and second, respectively, in both polls.

The Tigers won four of their six fall tournaments, tied for second in another and were fourth in the other.

DePauw posted a stroke average of 319.8 in 12 rounds, led by senior Sarah Gates with a 77.1 average and junior Ali Murtaugh at 78.9.

Former South Putnam High School standout Amanda Bollman is also a member of the Tiger golf squad.

DePauw will play again on March 23-25 in the Golden Isle Classic at Jekyll Island, Ga.

The Tigers will attempt to earn a sixth-straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title in April as well.

DPU teams have finished third in the last four NCAA Division III Championships and in the top four eaach of the last five years.
