Cadets get by North Putnam boys

Saturday, December 16, 2006

"You can't expect to win turning over that many times against a good team," North Putnam coach Wes Peek said after a loss Friday night to Cascade, 58-45, at home.

The Cougars committed 28 turnovers in the contest which resulted in some frustration after the game from the coach.

"We need to take care of business and stay in our gameplan." Peek said.

North looked poised to take control of the game mid-way through the third quarter after Brayden Dahlstrom popped a three and gave the Cougars a one point lead, 35-34, with five minutes remaining. But that would be the last lead NPHS had.

The Cougars could only manage one point for the rest of the quarter as opposed to Cascade's nine. North's seem to divert from their plan and for a time seemed frantic to find it. The Cadet's Brad Suter netted a bucket as time expired to give Cascade a ten point lead going into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, Cascade kept pressing the Cougars into turnovers and banging in shots from the outside. Jake Daugherty was big for Cascade scoring the first four points in the quarter, the second a coast-to-coast lay-in off a steal.

Gritty play from Jake Mullis helped the Cougars stay close in fourth quarter scoring but they couldn't overcome the numerous turnovers and a 14 point lead staring them in the face during the fourth quarter.

As the buzzer sounded, the Cadets walked away with the 13 point win.

The game started well for North as Griffen Dahlstrom scored the opening basket for the Cougars just :20 seconds into the game. The Dahlstrom's and Mullis accounted for all of North's first quarter scoring. Dahlstrom ended the quarter hitting the hoop and foul shot.

The second period was more of Griffen Dahlstrom as he scored seven of his game-high 16 points in the second quarter. Mullis and Max Schreiber helped the Cougars stay close. Schreiber grabbed a rebound and put in up and in with 3:42 remaining to pull North to within two points.

Strong play from Cascade's Suter and A.J. Austin kept the Cadets in front of the Cougars the entire quarter and walked into halftime with a five point lead, 30-25.

Mullis started the third by scoring a short jumper for North but the Cougars could never get the game back under control. They continued to fight until the end, never letting Cascade take a breath.

"Our kids played with a tremendous amount of effort," Peek said. "They don't quit."

North will travel to Riverton Parke tonight at 6:30 p.m.
