Friends of Library to grow endowment by $7,500

Monday, December 18, 2006

The Putnam County Community Foundation has awarded Friends of the Putnam County Public Library with a matching grant to build the library endowment by $7,500 or more.

Contributions and gifts made to the Putnam County Library endowment will be matched by the Community Foundation 50 cents for every dollar from now until Nov. 30, 2007. All gifts will be matched, until the matching dollar goal has been met.

Sue Parsons commented, "The Friends of the Putnam County Public Library has been an important community organization in promoting literacy, the love of reading and the freedom to read. It supports the Library with money, moral support, programs, and manpower."

Every year, Friends of the Putnam County Public Library helps support 50 cross-generational, educational library programs which attract more than 2,500 people. This past summer, it motivated children to read by providing 1,600 prizes for more than 1,000 children who reached their reading goals, and offered movie entertainment for 500 viewers.

With an endowment at the Community Foundation, contributions are never spent, but are invested and provide a charity with steady funding forever. "Building an endowment gives a local non-profit or church the best way it can develop steady sustainable funding," said Eric Wolfe, Community Development Director for the Community Foundation. "An endowment at the Community Foundation also provides caring and visionary people in the community numerous different ways to give to a charity apart from cash."

Anyone wanting to contribute to the Friends of the Putnam County Library endowment and having their gifts matched can send them to the Putnam County Community Foundation, in care of Putnam County Library Fund, 2 S. Jackson St., Greencastle, 46135, with checks made out to "Putnam County Community Foundation".
