Tigers hit the road for SCAC action

Thursday, January 4, 2007

After dropping the championship game in the Tampa Bay Shootout last weekend, the DePauw University men's basketball team is ready to get back on track.

The Tigers will face a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foes on the road this weekend, taking on Sewanee Friday before heading to Oglethorpe Sunday.

DePauw (9-2, 1-0 SCAC) suffered its first defeat since Nov. 19, a 79-71 loss at Chicago, and saw its eight-game winning streak snapped Sunday when Hamilton defeated the Tigers.

Reid Sakel led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points, while Matt McDonald chipped in with 14. Tony James scored 13, and Austin Brown finished with 11.

Austin Brown leads the Tigers in scoring this season, averaging 15.6 points per game while shooting 62.3 percent from the field, including 44.4 percent from beyond the three-point line.

Stephen Schott ranks second on the squad in points per game, scoring 14.8. Schott is shooting 51.2 percent from the field and 78.3 percent from the free throw stripe.

Sakel averages 11.5 points for DePauw, and Moore is scoring 11.2 per game while leading the Tigers in assists with 5.6 per game.

McDonald is the fifth DePauw player averaging double figures in scoring with an even 10 per game. He is shooting 55.7 percent from the floor and pulls down an average of 6.1 rebounds per game.

For the Tigers' first game this weekend, a Friday match-up against Sewanee, DePauw seems to have a decisive advantage on paper.

Sewanee enters this weekend's contest with an overall record of 1-8 and one SCAC victory, an 82-77 victory over Oglethorpe on Dec. 2.

Sewanee shoots just 39.6 percent from the field and has been outscored by its opponents, 697-595 this season.

Sewanee boasts two players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Joey Garcia's 16.4 points per game.

The Tigers will face the Oglethorpe Petrels less than 48 hours after their encounter with Sewanee for their second SCAC game of the weekend.

Oglethorpe (6-3, 0-1 SCAC) is coming off an 87-79 victory at Piedmont Tuesday.

Andrew Tutlowitsky led the Stormy Petrels with 33 points.

Tutlowitsky was 11-of-11 from the field, including 7-of-7 from three-point range, and went 4-of-4 at the charity stripe.

The Tigers will start its weekend at Sewanee Friday at 8 p.m. before traveling to Oglethorpe to face the Stormy Petrels Sunday at 1 p.m.
