Girls' Basketball Roundup

Saturday, January 6, 2007

North Putnam High School's girls' varsity basketball team picked up its third win of the season Thursday at home against Fountain Central, 54-28.

Senior Brook Miller led the Cougars with a solid all-around game. Miller recorded a game-high 17 points and added six assists and three rebounds in 25 minutes.

Taylor Alles chipped in with a career-high 14 points to go with seven rebounds, and Shawna Johnston and Carlye McGaughey each recorded eight points in the victory.

"We played really well," Cougars coach Kevin Smith said. "We finally put together four quarters and finished with a win."

Smith was pleased with the Cougars' offensive production in Thursday's game, only the third game this season in which NPHS has finished with more than 50 points.

But he said the real credit for the win goes to the Cougars' defense.

"Defensively I thought we played well," Smith said. "We covered our rotations well, and we rebounded well out of our zone.

"On offense, we ran the floor and looked for each other, and we were getting the shots that we've been getting most of the year. We just finished them well (Thursday)."

Ashley Pietras had four points and five rebounds, while Leah Crosby had three points and seven boards.

Chelsea Green contributed two rebounds and three assists, and Ashley Stigall had two boards.

"The post players played well, and the perimeter players played well," Smith said. "It was a total team effort."

The Cougars' junior varsity team also picked up a victory over the Mustangs, 29-12. Elsiana Crosby led North Putnam with nine points.

The Cougars will be in action again Tuesday at home against Western Boone, with a scheduled junior varsity start of 6 p.m.
