GHS boys, girls win at WCC

Greencastle High School's boys' and girls' swimming teams are West Central Conference champions again.

The Tiger Sharks sank the other four competing schools in Saturday's conference championship meet at DePauw University.

The boys claimed first place at the meet with 411 points, followed by South Putnam's score of 240 in second and Cascade's 222 in third. North Putnam finished fourth with 165, and Speedway was fifth with 116.

In the girls' meet, GHS scored 432 points, followed by Cascade in second with 211.

The Eagles finished third with 207 points, Speedway was fourth with 205, and North Putnam came in fifth with 98 points.

Tiger Sharks girls' coach Emilie Bowman expressed similar sentiments.

Greencastle's boys pulled out nine first-place finishes in the conference meet, starting with a win in the 200-yard medley relay.

Luke Crimmins, Miles Salman, Dustin Wood and Luiz Cardoso finished first in the race with a time of one minute, 46.48 seconds.

North Putnam's Clifton Cloncs, Patrick Byrd, Kyle Smith and Brian Rhoden were third at 2:00.25, and the Eagles' Loren Ashcroft, Heath Pruitt, Brice Johnson and Cory Russell finished fifth with a time of 2:02.41.

Salman won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:16.92, with Wood finishing second at 2:18.09. Teammate William Dory finished third in the event with a time of 2:20.94.

South Putnam's Cory McCallie finished fourth at the 2:25.03 mark.

Cardoso was the winner in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 1:03.03, just ahead of Salman, who finished second at the 1:03.35 mark.

Byrd finished third at 1:03.60, and McCallie was fourth with a time of 1:03.75.

Crimmins captured a win in the 100-yard freestyle race with a time of 51.70 seconds, and Dory was third at the 54.80 mark.

Clark Becker finished fourth for South Putnam at 55.59, and Smith was sixth for the Cougars with a time of 57.32.

Crimmins also picked up a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.94, nearly six seconds ahead of teamate Anthony Paul, who finished second with a time of 1:04.68. Byrd was fourth at 1:07.51 for the Cougars, and Ashcroft finished eighth for South Putnam with a time of 1:12.12.

Mark Jedele claimed another Greencastle win in the 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 5:21.40, while Austin Woodall was fourth at the 5:49.12 mark.

Wes Albright of South Putnam finished sixth at 6:07.60, and Luke Kelly finished 11th for North Putnam at 7:00.88.

Crimmins, Jedele, Adam Clute and Cardoso won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.66, while South Putnam's team of Jon Weaver, Chris Smiley, McCallie and Becker were third at 1:42.62.

North Putnam's Rhoden, Byrd, Jon Taggert and Smith finished fourth at the 1:44.79 mark.

Wood won the 100-yard breaststroke for the Tiger Sharks with a time of 1:05.85, followed by teammate Ryan Payne's time of 1:10.09. The Eagles' Johnson was fourth at 1:11.35, and Taggert of NPHS finished seventh with a time of 1:18.86.

The Tiger Sharks' last win of the day came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Dory, Nick Stevens, Salman and Jedele finished with a time of 3:40.44.

Smiley, McCallie, Pruitt and Becker of South Putnam were second at 3:58.17, and the Cougars' Kelly, Scott Williams, Pierce and Jeff Taggert were fifth with a time of 4:17.18.

North Putnam tallied one victory in the boys' meet, as Rhoden won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 195.30.

Greencastle's Paul was second with 161.65, and Weaver finished fourth for South Putnam at 133.25.

In the girls' meet, the Tiger Sharks won in 10 events.

Kelsey Murtaugh, Morgan Terry, Melissa Ball and Erica Soster of Greencastle won in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:00.34.

North Putnam's Ryanne Lehr, Katie Wilcox, Shelbey Richey and Alyssa Simpson were fourth with a time of 2:22.05.

The Tiger Sharks' Erika Collins won the 200-yard freestyle race with a time of 2:09.22, followed by Laura Manninen of South Putnam, who finished second at the 2:10.97 mark.

Ball earned the third victory of the day for Greencastle, finishing first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:59.52. South Putnam's Janaye Asher was fifth at 2:51.44.

Soster claimed victory in the 50-yard freestyle race with a time of 26.53, followed by Wilcox at 27.77. Amanda Lund had the Eagles' best finish in the race, coming in at the 30.75 mark.

Soster was also a winner in the 100-yard freestyle race with a time of 58.88. Collins was second for GHS with a mark of 59.21, followed by teammate Ashley Allred's third-place finish of 1:01.94.

Wilcox was fourth with a time of 1:02.41, and Samantha Tomasino of South Putnam finished ninth at 1:08.96.

Murtaugh picked up a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.02, followed by Ball in second with a time of 1:07.42. Greencastle teammate Natasha Aring was third with a time of 1:14.64, and the Tiger Sharks' Liz Poor was fourth at the 1:18.30 mark.

Murtaugh earned another win for the Tiger Cubs in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:04.20. Jackie Cantonwine of Greencastle was second with a time of 1:08.24, while Tomasino had the top time for the Eagles in the event with a mark of 1:19.95.

Lehr finished eighth with a time of 1:21.02.

Greencastle's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Murtaugh, Allred, Collins and Soster earned a win with a time of 1:48.54, while South Putnam's Greta Alig, Asher, Lund and Manninen finished third at 2:02.68.

North Putnam's Richey, Simpson, Lehr and Wilcox finished fourth in the race with a time of 2:06.37.

Terry picked up a win for Greencastle in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:19.59. Asher was fourth for South Putnam at 1:24.44, and Kiana Werner of North Putnam was 10th with a time of 1:28.89.

Allred, Ball, Cantonwine and Collins won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:15.94, while Alig, Tabitha Arnold, Tomasino and Manninen of SPHS were second at 4:33.86.

South Putnam had a pair of wins in Saturday's meet.

Shelby Johnston earned a win for the Eagles in the one-meter dive with a score of 179.45. Greencastle's Sarah Land was second with a score of 168.70, and Richey was fifth for NPHS, tallying a score of 135.10.

Manninen picked up the Eagles' second win of the meet, winning the 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 5:45.72.Terry was second with a time of 5:47.55.

"Laura works really hard every time out," Condon said. "She's really a leader for the girls, and it shows in how she performs in the meets and in how she carries herself."

The Eagles will be back in the pool today at 5:30 p.m. at home against North Montgomery, while the Tiger Sharks will be at home against Cascade Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. North Putnam will be in action again Saturday at Indian Creek at 9 a.m.
