County Museum seeking Julian family stories

What do you know about Percy Julian and the Julian family?

No matter how short the story, the Museum would love to know what you remember or have heard about Percy Julian and the Julian family.

The Putnam County Museum will host an oral history event to gather information about the Julians at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. The museum is located at 1105 N. Jackson St..

Percy Julian was a world-reknown scientist who improved millions of lives through physostigmine, an important drug used to treat glaucoma, cortisone treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, and hormone treatments for expectant mothers which prevented spontaneous abortion. His achievements are particularly remarkable because he faced strong discrimination as an African American both in educational and employment opportunities. His family moved from Montgom-ery, Ala., to Greencastle so that all six of the Julian children could pursue their educations at Greencastle High School and DePauw.

On Feb. 3, Defying the Odds, a community-curated exhibit Percy Julian and his family opened at the Putnam County Museum. The exhibit was created by the Putnam County Public Library, DePauw University, NAACP and Greencastle High School students. Everyone is invited to learn more about the entire Julian family.

and their achievements. The exhibit will be open through early April. Museum hours are Tuesday-Friday from 1-4 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment.
