Tigers hold off RHIT

Wednesday, January 17, 2007

The DePauw Tigers welcomed the Rose-Hulman Engineers to the Lilly Center Tuesday night, where despite not playing to their strong points, they were able to down the Engineers, 58-43.

Being more of an up-tempo team, DePauw seemed to have problems at the start of the game with the slowed pace the Engineers love to play.

"The game went exactly the way they wanted," Coach Bill Fenlon said after the game.

"We were just able to beat them at their game."

DePauw really opened things up the second half as Austin Brown scored five quick points for the Tigers. Mike Moore drained a three-pointer and was followed by Brown with another four-point run.

The Tigers played tough defense all night, limiting the Engineers to just 33 percent shooting from the floor, including a mere six percent from the three-point line. DePauw also had an 11 board advantage over Rose-Hulman.

DePauw had three players score in double figures. Moore lead the team with 18 points while Brown and Matt McDonald contributed 10 each.

Rose-Hulman was lead by David Yaraschefski who scored a game high 20 points and pulled down five rebounds. Ron George scored eight for the Engineers.

DePauw opened up a 20-point lead in the second half as Moore did a little show and go, faking a pass and laid the ball up and in. Toward the end of the game, Brian Oiler blocked a shot and ran the floor to get the score. Oiler contributed five points for the Tigers.

Fenlon commented on the importance of his players coming off the bench.

"Brian Oiler has been playing the best basketball of his career. Tony James is a able to come in and keep the pace up for us and Ryan Werntz is becoming a better rebounder for us," Fenlon said.

The game started with the Engineers holding strong with the Tigers, jumping out to a 9-6 lead. That's when the Tigers took control.

The tide turned as Brown blocked a three-point attempt by Rose-Hulman and Moore scored seven points to give DePauw a 15-9 lead.

James scored six straight points to close the half for DePauw including a coast-to-coast drive after a steal.

The Tigers rode that momentum into the second half and ultimately the victory.

Fenlon ,after the game, voiced his concern about the team's defense, but was quick to note the team has made strides in the past two weeks and is taking its job more seriously. He also commented on their need to pound the ball inside.

"I feel we must get the ball inside better and then we have to produce," Fenlon said.

DePauw will next face Trinity Friday at 8 p.m.
