James F. Cox

James F. Cox, 87, Cloverdale and formerly of Greencastle, died Sunday.

Born in Parke County, he was the son of William Thomas and Nellie Amanda (Whited) Cox.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from October 1940 until November 1946, and was aboard the destroyer, USS Cummings in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He also served aboard the USS Davey Crockett. He was a member of Clinton Falls Community Church, and was employed by IBM Corp. from 1954-74, and worked part time at Putnam County Hospital for 20 years.

He married Mary Frances Cox on April 6, 1947. She preceded him in death on July 31, 1989.

Surviving are two daughters, Martha Ann Klock and husband, Mark, and Mary Lou Hazelrigg and husband, Ed; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Stewart Cox, Fred G. Cox, Elmer Cox, Clarence "Bob" Cox, Clayton Cox, Oscar Cox, Claudie Cox; and sisters Maudie Gerald, Louise Shonkwiler, Marie Wells and Frances Sherry.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Kelzo "Buck" E. Martin Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Clinton Falls Cemetery.
