Bruins hand Tiger Cubs 13-point loss

Monday, January 29, 2007

Thirteen was an unlucky number for the Greencastle High School boys' basketball team Saturday.

Tri-West scored the first 13 points of the game Saturday en route to a 63-50 win over the Tiger Cubs.

"After that run, we played even with them the rest of the way," GHS coach Troy Greenlee said.

The Bruins opened the flood gates to begin the game, scoring 13 points through the first five minutes.

Greencastle didn't get on the board until Zac Remsburg drilled a three-pointer with 3:18 to go in the first quarter.

The Bruins managed to score four more points in the frame but limited the Tiger Cubs to just four more as well to take a 17-7 lead into the second quarter.

Tri-West extended its lead to 15, 22-7, forcing Greencastle to call a timeout with 4:55 left in the first half.

Following the timeout, a bucket by Brennan Burks dropped the Tri-West lead to 12, but that was as close as the Tiger Cubs could get before halftime as the Bruins led, 30-17, heading into intermission.

The Bruins managed to extend their lead to as much as 21, 45-24, following two free throws from Tyler Bruce with 2:09 left in the third quarter and led, 51-32 going into the final period.

Greencastle rallied midway through the fourth period thanks to sophomore Drew Evens, who scored six of his team-high 13 points in the quarter.

"I thought the kids, when they got down in the third quarter, could have just quit," Greenlee said. "But they didn't.

"I thought (Evens) played really well."

Back-to-back baskets by Evens late in the fourth period brought Greencastle to within nine, 58-49, but Tri-West's Tylan Thompson found Marco Moses for consecutive buckets with a free throw from Greencastle's Erick Burgeson sandwiched inbetween, sealing the game for the Bruins.

"I don't know how we lost him, but we did," Greenlee said of the two shots by Moses. "They are a very, very quick team."

Moses finished with a game-high 19 points while Bruce added 18. In addition to Evens' 13, Greencastle got 11 from Burgeson. Brennan Burks added 10 points and six rebounds.

In junior varsity action, Greencastle lost, 39-32, in overtime, dropping to 6-5 this season. Ashton Marshall led the Tiger Cubs with eight points while Bo Walker had seven. Justin Bartrum also had six.

Greencastle (8-8, 4-1 in the WCC) will face conference foe Monrovia on the road Friday at 7:30 p.m.
