11 grapplers moving on
AVON -- Eleven Putnam County wrestlers managed to advance to the Mooresville Regional after placing among the top four in their respective weight classes at the Avon Sectional Saturday.
Brownsburg won the sectional title with 262.5 points while Avon was second at 227.5, followed by Plainfield's 201.5, Greencastle's 108.5, Danville's 105, Cascade's 104, Cloverdale's 97, Tri-West's 90, South Putnam's 73.5, and North Putnam's 59.
Cloverdale advanced the most wrestlers for a Putnam County team with five but the Tiger Cubs produced two champions at the meet.
At 160 pounds, Chris Pingleton defeated Danville's Nick Lynch by major decision, 13-2. In addition, Robert Bittles ousted South Putnam's Josh Sanders by decision, 12-6, at 171 pounds.
During the finals, both Greencastle wrestlers displayed similar tactics, taking down their opponents for points before letting them up again.
"The kids wrestled hard," Greencastle coach Russ Hesler said. "(Bittles and Pingleton) are where I thought they should be."
South Putnam coach Scott Miller said Sanders had been battling illness all week, making his run on Saturday special. He added Sanders had faced Pingleton earlier this season, but the sectional match was better.
"It was a lot better match this time," Miller said.
Other Greencastle wrestlers advancing to the Mooresville Regional included Ty Buchanan, who finished fourth at 145 pounds and Jacob Wright, who placed third at 152 pounds.
Saturday's titles were the second for both Pingleton and Bittles.
The Clovers managed to get five grapplers out of the sectional as Dylan Stone led the way with a third-place finish in the heavyweight division.
"I wasn't completely satisified on the day," Cloverdale coach Brian Siddons said. "But we had a few guys get through that we didn't know if we would get through.
"There were some surprises."
Stone placed second behind North Putnam's Emmett Boruff in the heavyweight division. Boruff won via pin and captured his second sectional title.
Stone took Boruff down early in the match, but Boruff responded by escaping Stone's clutches and pinning the Cloverdale junior.
"Emmett has just got a way of doing that," Siddons said. "(Stone) just left that arm hanging and you can't do that against Emmett."
"They're good friends, but they go at it like there's no tomorrow," North Putnam coach Kenny Kerns said following the heavyweight match. "Emmett finally wrestled like he's capable."
Other wrestlers advancing for the Clovers included Brittney Hughes, who placed fourth at 103 pounds; Benjamin Sanders, who placed third at 135 pounds; Scott Mayhew, who finished fourth at 171 pounds; and Ben Cheatham, who finished fourth at 215 pounds.
In addition to Sanders' second-place finish at 160 pounds, the Eagles got Jon Parker and Seth Green out. Parker placed second at 145 pounds while Green was fourth at 125.
"We did OK," Miller said. "We'd like to have had a couple more (advance) but it's a tough sectional. We were really hoping for four."
In addition to Boruff's title in the heavyweight division, North Putnam managed to get Jacob Stigall out at 189 pounds. Stigall placed third in his division.
"I'm real pleased with this," Kerns said. "(The team) was aggressive. You'd always like to have more kids go, but it's hard to go against the big schools. But our kids never gave up."
