MONROVIA -- Turnovers proved costly for the Greencastle High School girls' basketball team Friday.

The Tiger Cubs committed 29 turnovers, including five straight to begin the third period, en route to a 55-29 loss to the Monrovia Bulldogs.

The Tiger Cubs finished the regular season with a record of 1-19, including 0-6 in the West Central Conference.

Five of the three turnovers beginning the third period resulted in transition baskets for the Bulldogs.

"Their guards are really good. They're a lot quicker than us," Greencastle coach Glen Hile said. "They were silly turnovers."

The Tiger Cubs held close through one period of action Friday, trailing only 9-7.

"It was 9-7 in the first quarter for a reason," Hile said. "We were counting on them to miss shots."

The Bulldogs were 3-for-15 from the field in the first period.

A bucket from Olivia Miller knotted the game at 9-all to begin the second quarter before the Bulldogs erupted for eight straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers from Victoria Dorsett and Tiffani Dillon, forcing a Greencastle timeout.

The Tiger Cubs, however, were not able to recover, as they didn't score again in the period until there were 24 seconds left, as Kelsey Hennette found the basket.

But Monrovia managed to capture a 26-13 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

"In the second quarter, they started hitting shots, and then we got frustrated," Hile said.

Monrovia took advantage of the five straight turnovers in the third period, scoring eight points off of them to take a commanding 34-13 lead.

By the end of the third period, the Tiger Cubs trailed, 45-21.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to as many as 29, 52-34, midway through the final period before both teams emptied their benches.

Sophomore Becky Grivas finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds to lead Greencastle in the loss.

"Becky played real well," Hile said. "Against athletic teams, she excels because she can jump."

Hile was pleased with his postplayers Friday. Miller finished with three points but had five rebounds while Hennetted also contributed six points and five boards.

Monrovia was paced by Shayla Black's 17 points.

The Tiger Cubs will face Owen Valley in the first round of the West Vigo Sectional Tuesday, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
