DePauw women ready for SCAC Tournament

Heading into the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, the DePauw University women's basketball team is in good shape.

The Tigers are the top seed and will face eighth-seeded Sewanee at 7 p.m. Friday at Rhodes College.

The Tigers finished the regular season with a 22-3 overall record and 12-2 in SCAC play. Sewanee is 9-15 overall and finished 3-11 in league play.

Other first-round tourney games include Oglethorpe against Southwestern, Trinity against Rhodes, and Hendrix against Austin.

The Tigers defeated Sewanee at home on Feb. 16, 80-47. Sewanee finished with a 2-11 record on the road, but 2-0 in neutral court games.

Steffi Renninger leads Sewanee offensively with an average of 14 points per game, having tallied 335 points in 24 games. She also averaged 12.7 points in conference game.

Sewanee also gets 13.7 from Dani Pettay, and 8.3 from Anne Wills.

As a team, Sewanee is averaging 63.1 points per game and is shooting 36 percent (519-for-1,447), while allowing opponents to score 67.2 points per game. Sewanee opponents are also shooting 44 percent (617-for-1,394) from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc (112-for-354).

Sewanee totaled 860 rebounds this year. Courtney Childress leads the team on the glass, averaging 6.6 boards per game.

However, opponents have outrebounded Sewanee, by nearly 100 rebounds (953) this season.

In contrast, DePauw is averaging 79.8 points per game while giving up only 54.7. The Tigers are firing 49 percent from the field this year (751-for-1,548) while allowing opponents to hit only 37 percent (516-for-1,382).

DePauw is paced by Liz Bondi's 16.1 points per game average. She tallied 371 points in 23 games this season.

In addition, Cassie Pruzin averages 8.9 points per game while Caitlin McGonigal is scoring 7.9 and Gretchen Haehl is averaging 7.2.

Starting point guard Suzy Doughty also scores 6.9 points per game while dishing out 5.9 assists per game.

DePauw finished the season with a one-game lead in the conference standings over Oglethorpe. Trinity finished third at 10-4 while Hendrix was fourth at 9-5. Austin came in fifth with an 8-6 conference mark. Rhodes placed sixth at 7-7 while Southwestern was seventh at 6-8. Sewanee and Centre tied for eighth at 3-11 and Millsaps was 10th at 1-13.
