Steve Butts has announced his candidacy for mayor.

Greencastle resident and business owner Steve Butts has announced his bid for mayor.

Butts has been the owner of Steve's Wrecker Service for 17 years and a U-Haul dealer for 15 years. He was raised in Putnam County and joined the U.S. Navy Seabees, returning in 1971.

Prior to opening the wrecker business, Butts accepted a position as final project superintendent of a multi-million dollar complex development in southern California.

"Through this opportunity I gained considerable experience in managing multi-projects and extensive budgets, supervising employees, and scheduling and completing projects within time constraints," Butts said.

"I started Steve's Wrecker Service in 1989 with one truck and a telephone. Now I have one of the best equipped wrecker services in three counties," he said. "We have been ranked in the top 1 percent in the nation for the service we provide by the American Towman Magazine.

"We have received the AAA Goodwill Ambassador Award and have been involved in the creation of abandoned vehicle laws that are to be presented to legislator's in the near future.

"Greencastle has given my family and I many opportunities to become successful. When the people of Greencastle and Putnam County support you, there is very little you can't accomplish. I am looking forward to the opportunity to be mayor of Greencastle. It's a chance to give back, to improve our economic development plan for the community and maintain total support for all employers."

Butts says relations need to be improved with businesses and government entities to assist in implementing requirements that obligate outside contractors to utilize local contractors and trades as much as possible.

He also says the city needs to give local merchants, suppliers, and businesses and trades a first-up opportunity to provide services within the city before going outside of our community, thus improving our financial situation, qualifying us for bonds if needed.

"I have the highest respect for all of our local leaders. I just believe a fresh view and different management style is what is required for the City of Greencastle now and in the future," Butts said.
