Clifton J. Phillips, 87, Greencastle, died Tuesday at Castleton Healthcare.

Born in Olean, N.Y., he was the son of Charles C. and Edith M. (Grey) Phillips.

He graduated from Hiram College, Starr King School for the Ministry and Harvard University. After serving in a civil affairs unit of the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II, he was a member of a military occupation unity in Japan and later a civilian employee of the Defense Department there.

A member of the DePauw University history department from 1954-84, he published several books and articles on historical topics and was a visiting scholar and teacher in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

In 1952, he married Rachel Martin, who died in 1991.

He is survived by daughters, Elaine Phillips Jones and husband Doug-las, Indianapolis, Alexis Phillips, Indianapolis, and Patience Phillips and husband Young Hwang, Pana-ma City, Panama; brother, Donald Phillips, Cinna-minson, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, wife Rachel, sister Jean Wheeler and son Peter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Putnam County Public Library, Greencastle.

Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of Indiana.
