Cecil C. English, 86, Bainbridge, died Monday.

Born in Greencastle, he was the son of Vergal and Lola (Hand) English.

He was a 1940 graduate of Bainbridge High School, and a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army 814th Aviation Engineers and was involved in five major battles.

He attended IUPUI night classes for two years, and retired as an electrician from Uniroyal after 33 1/2 years of service.

He was a long-time active member of Bainbridge Christian Church, past president of the Bainbridge Lions Club, Past Worshipful Master of the Bainbridge Masonic Lodge, a member of the Greencastle Masonic Lodge, a member of the Roachdale VFW, and a 30-year member of the Putnam County Aviation Board, where he was instrumental in changing the entrance from the south side of the Putnam County Airport to the north side of the Airport. He was also a private pilot.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Vera L. Heaney English; four children, David L. English and wife Marge, Greencastle, Suzanne Lachmayer and husband Elliot, Danville, Francy English, Blooming-ton, and Debbie English, Brazil; sister, Gloria Higgins and husband Bob, Danville; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John English and sister Edith Spangler.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Ralph Lemmon officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Bainbridge Cemetery.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
