Tigers return to win column at Port Charlotte Invitational

Port Charlotte, Fla. -- DePauw jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three in the first and one in the second and never trailed on the way to a 9-3 win over Union (N.Y.) at the Port Charlotte Invitational on Wednesday. Coming off consecutive losses to St. Olaf, the Tigers climbed back over .500 at 11-10. Union fell to 1-7.

DePauw drew six walks and scored thee runs in the first. Matt Kleine added an RBI single in the second to make it 4-0.

After Paul Mene's second inning RBI single for the Dutchmen, DePauw added one of their own with Eric Reese's infield single.

In the sixth, Brendan Smith's sacrifice fly and Justin Weiner's RBI single made the lead 7-1.

Union cut the lead to 7-3 in the sixth with RBI from Brian Hurley and Matt Wentworth, but DePauw added one each in the seventh and eighth with singles from Jack Gavin and Mike Stout, respectively.

DePauw collected eight hits, with Reese leading the way with three. Weiner and Gavin each had two RBI. Mene and Hurley each totaled two of Union's seven hits.

Matt Westernkirch improved to 1-0 with the win, while John Tschantz picked up his first save. Josh McKelligan dropped to 2-0 with the loss.

The two teams played again this morning at 9:30.
