Edward E. Mayer, 79, Greencastle, died March 22 following a battle with cancer.

Born in Werschetz, Yugoslavia, he was the son of the late Stephan and Marie Mayer.

He earned his baccalaureate degree in Paris, France in 1950, graduated from the French National School of Oriental Languages in 1953, and earned the Licenced-es Lettres from the Sorbonne in 1954.

After moving to the United States in 1957, he taught at Iowa Wesleyan College and Knox College, then earned his doctorate degree from the University of Michigan in 1968 and joined the faculty at DePauw University where he taught German and Russian. He retired in 1990 and remained an associate professor emeritus.

He was a longtime volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program.

Survivors include his wife Joyce, Greencastle; daughter Julie Lamar and husband Jonathan, Westchester, Ohio; sons Robert Mayer and wife Charlotte, Rincon, Ga., and Raymond Mayer, Westfield; six grandchildren, and a sister, Edith Mayer, Pottstown, Pa.

A memorial visitation will be conducted at 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at DePauw's Memorial Student Union ballroom.
