Man critical after crash

FINCASTLE -- A Waynetown man was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning that also involved a North Putnam High School student.

The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on U.S. 231 at the intersection of County Road 1100 North.

Sgt. Don Pettit of the Putnam County Sheriff's Dept. reported that Brittany Hall, 16, Roachdale, was driving a 1998 Dodge Ram truck eastbound on CR 1100 North when she reached the intersection. She told Pettit she stopped and looked both ways, but did not see the northbound 1998 Geo Metro driven by Timothy Dennis, 43, Waynetown.

Hall pulled onto the road in front of the car, which collided with the right front tire area of the truck. The impact sent the small car off the road and caused the truck to spin.

Pettit reported that Dennis was trapped inside his car until emergency personnel could extricate him. The man suffered head and internal injuries, and was airlifted from the scene by AirEvac medical helicopter to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis. A Wishard spokesperson told the BannerGraphic later Thursday morning that Dennis was in critical condition.

Hall appeared uninjured after the accident, Pettit said.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The highway was closed for about two hours because of the accident. Assisting at the scene were Deputies Gregg Slover and Lt. Danny Wallace, Roachdale volunteer firefighters and PMH Ambulance.
