DePauw softball splits with Centre

DePauw softball took the first game of its SCAC doubleheader with visiting Centre, 8-0, in six innings, but the Colonels took the nightcap, 5-4. DePauw is 21-3 on the season and 1-1 in the SCAC, while Centre is 14-13 and 1-1 in conference.

Megan Soultz pitched a two-hitter while striking out eight. She improved to 9-2 on the year. Tyler Travis suffered the loss and dropped to 4-2.

The Tigers scored two in the third when Jessica Krueger's double drove in Chelsy Patterson. Krueger later scored on a Centre error. DePauw ended the game in the sixth on an RBI single from Laura Schlensker, a two-run single by Patterson, a two-run double by Kelly Schwerzler and Lauren Rees' sacrifice fly.

DePauw racked up 10 hits, led by Schlensker with three. Lindsey Willett and Rebecca Rhule each had one for the Colonels.

In game two, the Colonels scored four in the second on Jenny Jones' RBI single and Monice Vonderbrink's three-run homer.

DePauw rallied in the fourth, beginning with a single from Lauren Rees. A passed ball, then a sacrifice by Jessica Kruger advanced her to third. Rachel Gill's sacrifice RBI got the Tigers on the board.

Three batters later, Jessica Bowlds singled home Kelly Schwerzler and Carolyn Bartlett. Erin Ketchem rounded out the DePauw scoring by singling home Annie Morgan, who had pinch-run for Bowlds.

Vonderbrink scored the game-winner for Centre after a DePauw error in the sixth.

Seven different Tigers had one hit each, while Willett, Rhule and Charlotte Jones each had two of Centre's 10 hits.

The teams play a noon doubleheader today.
