Learn to detect, prevent crime

Parents and local officials interested in learning how to detect and prevent Internet crimes against children are urged to attend an upcoming set of workshops sponsored by Putnam County Family Support Services.

Detective Mike Widner, with the Noblesville Police Department, specializes in computer crimes and Internet crimes against children and will be talking about it on two separate occasions later this month.

The first session is scheduled for Wednesday April 25 and is meant for local officials, teachers and businesses professionals. It will be conducted from 10 a.m.-noon at the Peeler Arts Center on the DePauw campus.

The second session is meant for parents and will be conducted from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at the Julian Center Auditorium, Room 147, on the DePauw campus.

Participants in the workshops will learn:

  • Current trends among youth's Internet use,

  • How sex offenders use the Internet and groom their victims,

  • How cyber criminals steal identities and take over your computer,

  • How to protect your computer, your children and yourself against cyber crime,

  • About "My Space," the popular site that our youth utilize.

    The workshops are free and are being paid by a grant from CARe which is funded through the Indiana Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control, Rape Prevention Education Grant and Principal Investigator Mary Pilat.

    Anyone interested in attending is asked to RVSP to the Putnam County Family Support Services by Friday, April 20.
