Boy says he was shot at skatepark

Thursday, April 12, 2007

Greencastle police are investigating a report of a young male who says he was shot with a pellet gun while at the city skate park Wednesday evening.

Assistant Chief Brian Hopkins told the BannerGraphic that the two males accused of the shooting are both juveniles and were detained for questioning but were not arrested.

The suspects told police they were aiming at a post and accidentally shot the third juvenile in the stomach, Hopkins said. The victim did not appear to be seriously injured.

The incident was reported by the victim to Officer Jeff Modlin who was patrolling the area near the skate park at around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Hopkins.

The victim appeared to have a red mark on his stomach, according to a police report.

Hopkins said he was not aware of reports by witnesses that the suspects also threatened the victim with a knife before shooting him.

Police confiscated the alleged weapon, which Hopkins said appears to be a plastic Airsoft brand pellet gun, available at many retail stores. He believes the suspects were using plastic, BB-size ammunition.

Hopkins said the incident report will be turned over to the prosecutor's office for him to determine if charges should be filed against the two suspects.

Hopkins said officers regularly patrol the area of the skate park and Wednesday's alleged incident was one time when those patrols paid off.
