PUTNAMVILLE -- After Monday night's track meet between South Putnam, Cloverdale and Owen Valley, the coaches had one feeling in common -- relief just to have a meet.

By the schedule, the season is almost two weeks old. In reality, things are just getting started. The Clovers were running their first meet of the season. The Eagles were in just their second. After Monday's meet girls' and boys' meets, won by Cloverdale and Owen Valley, respectively, the coaches can finally see how their kids perform in real events.

"Overall, I'm pleased," said Cloverdale coach Kristy Crabtree. "We finally got to look at what we need to work on."

The Clovers turned in some solid performances in both the boys' and girls' competitions. They won five events on the girls' side and four for the boys.

"We had some pretty good finishes," Crabtree said.

"We had some personal bests already over last year."

High jump winner Ashley Koosman already topped 5 feet 4 inches, her new personal best. On the boys' side, Christian Cheatham jumped a best of 6 feet 3 inches on his way to winning the high jump. He also won the long jump at 19 feet 6 inches.

"We had a really good night at the high jump," Crabtree said.

For her part, South girls' coach Cathy Herrin was trying to find where she can best fit the 16 girls on her team.

"We rearranged some people to see what they could do today. Some people came through," Herrin said.

Among those doing well in a new spot was Kinder Martin, who placed second in the 800 with a 2:59.56.

"We found her race," Herrin said.

South did well in the 800 overall, placing first (Rachel Egold), second (Martin) and fourth (Heather Hughes). For her part, Egold was two seconds off her personal best.

Herrin also highlighted the performance of Shelby Johnston, who jumped 5 feet 2 inches in the high jump.

"Shebly did well in the high jump. Shelby just does well," Herrin said.

As the Eagles' season continues, the coach and her athletes will continue to find their places.

"Our them this year is 'Small but Mighty.' We're small, but we're trying to work it out."

On the boys' side, the Eagles carried a one-point lead into the final event before losing by four. Coach Carl Coons was not discouraged, though.

"It was a good meet for us," he said.

"We had some strong performances all across the board. We had some kids who stepped up."

While the Eagles won four events, Coons emphasized the consistency of his team.

"We had good second and third place performances. In a three-way meet, those are huge."

In the end, Coons, like the other coaches, was happy to see all the kids able to compete.

"It was a competitive meet, all around," Coons said.

"The kids have been waiting for a good day, and they got it."

The Clovers and Eagles return to action tonight, with Cloverdale hosting North Putnam and Eminence at 4:30 p.m. and South Putnam hosting Clay City and Shakamak at 4:30 p.m.
