DPU women reach top rank in Division III

The 16-1 DePauw women's tennis team, winner of seven straight matches, has climbed to the number one spot in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III women's rankings.

The ranking marks the first time in program history that the Tigers have reached the top spot.

DePauw has claimed four wins against other top 30 teams including a 6-3 victory over second-ranked Middlebury on March 28. The Tigers' lone loss came at ninth-ranked Emory on March 24.

The Tigers top the Central Region rankings and Liz Bondi is the top-ranked singles player in the region. Amrita Padda is 12th in the region, while Greer Mackie is 18th. Bondi and Padda top the regional doubles rankings, while Mackie and Sallie Crawford are 10th.

DePauw wraps up the regular season, April 27-29, when it competes in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship in Waco, Texas. The Tigers shared the 2006 SCAC title with Trinity after the championship match was suspended.

A pair of DPU softball players are SCAC co-Players of the Week

Two DePauw student-athletes have been selected Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week.

Sophomore catcher Rachel Gill was named a Tri-Offensive Player of the Week along with Centre's Monica Vonderbrink and Hendrix's Kim Tallent.

Gill hit .615 (8-for-13) with nine runs scored and six RBI as the Tigers swept Rhodes in a four-game SCAC East series. She had a double and a three-run home run among her eight hits.

For the season, Gill is hitting an SCAC-leading .471 and also leads the league in runs scored (34), hits (48) and total bases (77) and is second in the league in slugging percentage (.755), on-base percentage (.513) and runs batted in (41). Gill has 10 doubles (fourth in the SCAC), five triples (tied for third) and three home runs (tied for fifth).

Freshman Megan Soultz was named SCAC Co-Pitcher of the Week along with Trinity's Erin Mulvey.

Soultz went 2-0 on the week, tossing 14 innings of shutout ball while racking up eight strikeouts against no walks. She allowed just eight hits on the week.

For the season, Soultz is 12-2 on the mound and leads the league in ERA (0.65) and opponent's batting average (.147). She is second in wins, seventh in innings pitched (86.0) and third in strikeouts (103).

DePauw men defeat Indianapolis

DePauw men's tennis won Tuesday night, defeating the University of Indianapolis, 9-0.

The eighth-ranked Tigers are now 15-4.
