NP golf takes third at Southmont

WAVELAND -- North Putnam's golf team took third place amid some very stiff competition at Saturday's Southmont Invitational at Turkey Run Golf Course. Warren Central won with a 308, and Park Tudor was runner-up with a 317. The Cougars shot a 326.
"I was pretty encouraged with our finish," coach Keith Bodnarick said. "We finished ahead of Ben Davis and Franklin Central, both strong programs historically, and I felt like we established ourselves as someone to contend with come sectional time."
Bodnarick said the course played tough, as expected, with difficult pin placements and fast greens.
Patrick Byrd led the Cougars with a 78 and a fifth-place finish overall. Ben Mattingly of Park Tudor was medalist with a one-over 73.
Bodnarick came out of the tournament extremely pleased with how his team competed.
"We were grouped with Ben Davis, Warren Central and Park Tudor. I felt like we dealt with the pressure of playing head-to-head with those elite programs pretty well. That kind of pressure in a tournament setting can only make us better," Bodnarick said.
The players themselves wanted more, though.
"Our kids were disappointed that they didn't take the whole thing, and I'm glad they were disappointed. That shows me they want to excel," Bodnarick said.
The Cougars travel to Cloverdale at 4:30 p.m. today.

GHS takes sixth at Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE -- The Greencastle boys' golf team competed in the Terre Haute Invitational on Saturday, walking away with a sixth-place finish in a field of 15 teams.
Greencastle actually tied with Turkey Run but wound up sixth due to a fifth card tie-breaker.
For Greencastle, Wade Huber stepped up big for the Tiger Cubs, shooting a team-low 80, which also tied him for seventh overall in the tournament.
"Wade had a magnificent day," GHS coach Donovan Wheeler commented. "He was nervous, but we've emphasized the short game all season, and he found out first hand that even on a golf course like Hulman Links, the game's all about getting it up and down around the greens.
"He was down in the dumps after a bad round Thursday, and then he turns around and does this. I'm very happy for him."
David Lilly followed Huber with an 82 and Nick Pritchard shot an 87. Lossan Jones scored a 95 and Luke Crimmins brought it in with a 104 total.
"David had a great round going, then he fell apart with a triple on 18. He played like a leader, and if anyone can turn something like that into a positive, it's him," Wheeler said.
With a sixth-place finish in a large field, Wheeler is looking for some good things out of his squad but want to see a little more consistency.
"We've got five guys who can break 40, and we've got seven who can go low-40's. The problem right now is that we don't know which golfer's going to show up on what day--the good one or the bad one," Wheeler remarked.

Clovers drop a pair

LINTON -- The Clover-dale Clovers' softball team dropped a pair of games in the Linton Tourney Saturday. They lost the first game to Linton, 10-1 and then lost to Vincennes Lincoln 9-3.
In the first game, the Clovers managed only one hit in the game, that coming in the sixth inning with Martika Byrd reached base.
Jennifer Wiley went the distance and threw for one strikeout, two walks and 10 hits.
Of Linton's 10 hits, eight were singles with one double and one triple.
In game two, the Clovers allowed Vincennes Lincoln to score nine runs in the first two innings, and that put the Clovers in a hole.
"Errors early in the game let it get out of hand," coach Greg Crum commented.
Wiley got the starting nod again in game two, throwing for two strikeouts, two walks and nine hits.
Cloverdale will host the Cascade Cadets today at 4:30 p.m.

Cougars split doubleheader

BROWNSBURG -- The North Putnam boys' baseball team split a double header with Bethesda Saturday on the road. The Cougars won the first game 11-6, but dropped the second game 10-6.
In the first game, the Cougar offense exploded, scoring 11 runs on nine hits, while committing only two errors.
Shelby Reed and Griffen Dahlstrom were both 2-for-4 at the plate, while Jake Mullis went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the game.
Brayden Dahlstrom took the mound for the Cougars and gave up only six hits.
The second game saw Griffen Dahlstrom take the hill for the Cougars only to be put behind the plate when starting catcher Jordan Berry was injured and had to leave the game.
With Griffen Dahlstrom off the mound, coach Norm Fish had to put a pitcher into the game that had seen zero action all season.
Kyle Rooker was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Cougars while Jerrett Ban two hits on the day.
The Cougars will host South Putnam today at 4:30 p.m.
