Hong Kong focus of PCPL program

Monday, May 7, 2007

Greencastle High School exchange student, Kevin Tse will present a program, "Hong Kong: From British Colony to ... One Country, Two Systems" at the Putnam County Public Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9.

Using images to reinforce his talk, he will discuss whether Hong Kong's post-colonial system is working after 10 years. Tse was 7 years old in 1997 when the British relinquished power over Hong Kong as its colony. Now people are looking back to assess Hong Kong's unique arrangement of "One Country -- Two Systems."

He will address his identity as Chinese but permanent resident of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong as a tourist and cultural center based on British legal and management systems, and English as its official language. Hear how socialist China and capitalist Hong Kong manage to co-exist under this special post-colonial set up and what to expect in the future.

A question and answer session will follow.
